I Gave Claude a Hedge Fund Analyst's Brain. Here's What Happened.

How a carefully crafted system prompt turned an AI into my personal quant research team. Learn how to build your own AI portfolio manager.

The Problem With Trading Bots

Here's the dirty secret about algorithmic trading: the bots don't manage themselves.

You can spin up the most sophisticated mean-reversion strategy or momentum scanner, but six months later you're left wondering:

  • Is this bot still working, or am I bag-holding a strategy that died in Q2?
  • Am I accidentally correlated across all my bots without realizing it?
  • What's the market even *doing* right now?

Most traders check their bots once a week. Maybe. The rest of the time, they're flying blind.

I wanted something different. I wanted a brutally honest portfolio manager who would roast my bad decisions, catch my blind spots, and actually *think* about markets—not just execute orders.

So I built one.

Meet My AI Hedge Fund Analyst

I connected Claude to my VibeTrader account via MCP (Model Context Protocol) and gave it a very specific job description. Not "be helpful." Not "answer my questions."

Be my unfair advantage.

Here's the core philosophy behind the prompt:

``

You operate like a world-class hedge fund analyst combined with a quantitative trader.

You think probabilistically, not emotionally.

You are skeptical, evidence-driven, and brutally honest.

`

This isn't your typical ChatGPT "I'd be happy to help!" energy. This is "your momentum bot is overfit garbage and you need to hear it" energy.

The Five Jobs I Gave It

1. Continuous Portfolio Audit

Every single conversation, it reviews:

  • All active bots and their logic
  • Historical performance and drawdowns
  • Exposure concentration I might not see
  • Strategies that are *fragile* vs ones that are *robust*

The key instruction: Flag decay early, not after it's obvious.

2. Market Intelligence (With Teeth)

I don't want news summaries. I want *implications*.

`

For each important development:

  • Explain why it matters
  • Who benefits
  • Who gets hurt
  • Whether it is noise or signal
  • Which strategies it favors or invalidates

`

This turns market noise into actionable signal.

3. Strategy Ideation

When market conditions shift, it proposes new bots with:

  • Clear thesis (macro + micro)
  • Entry/exit logic
  • Risk rules
  • Explicit kill conditions (when should this strategy die?)

That last one is crucial. Every strategy has an expiration date. Most traders never define it.

4. Quantitative Rigor

No hand-wavy analysis allowed:

`

You are allowed to say:

"This strategy has negative expected value under current conditions."

You are NOT allowed to say:

"This could go either way."

`

Indecision is a failure. Make a call. Own it.

5. Structured Output

Every response follows the same format:

  • Executive Summary (5-7 bullets, brutally concise)
  • Portfolio Diagnosis
  • Market Regime Assessment
  • Actionable Recommendations
  • Watchlist & Triggers
  • Confidence Level

No rambling. No fluff. Just signal.

The Secret Sauce: Operating Principles

The prompt ends with the rules that actually matter:

`

  • Assume I want truth, not comfort
  • Avoid hindsight bias
  • Avoid overfitting
  • Avoid narrative fallacy
  • Cash is a valid position
  • Doing nothing is sometimes the correct trade
  • Survival > returns

`

That last one is the whole game. Survival > returns.

You can't compound gains if you blow up.

What It Actually Looks Like

Here's a real interaction:

Me: "Review my portfolio"

Claude:

> EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

> - Your NVDA momentum bot is 73% correlated with your SMCI bot. You're not diversified, you're leveraged to the same thesis twice.

> - The mean-reversion strategy on SPY hasn't triggered in 47 days. Either the market regime shifted or the parameters are too tight.

> - You have 34% idle capital while running strategies at minimum position sizes. This is opportunity cost.

> - Recommendation: Pause the SMCI bot, redeploy capital to the SPY strategy with widened bands.

No pleasantries. No "great question!" Just diagnosis and prescription.

Why This Matters for VibeTrader Users

If you're running bots on VibeTrader, you already have the infrastructure. The bots execute. The positions update. The P&L tracks.

But who's watching the watchers?

This prompt pattern turns any AI with MCP access into your personal quant team:

  • Portfolio risk officer
  • Market analyst
  • Strategy researcher
  • Performance auditor

All in one conversation.

OUTPUT FORMAT (every response):

Try It Yourself

  • Connect Claude (or your AI of choice) to VibeTrader via MCP
  • Paste this system prompt
  • Ask it to review your portfolio
  • Prepare to have your feelings hurt (in a good way)

The best traders I know aren't the ones with the best strategies. They're the ones who audit their own thinking relentlessly.

Now you can automate that too.
